What Ranthambore is - for Historians
The history of Ranthambore National Park dates back to the 10th century. Before a National Park, this place was famous because of the Ranthambore Fort. This fort was built in the 10th century by the Chauhan rulers and later expanded by various dynasties. Around the fort, there was a vast jungle with a lot of wild animals which now has become a National Park. Ranthambore National Park Rajasthan is even named after the Ranthambore Fort because it’s a famous tourist spot in this area. Ranthambore Fort is located inside the park and it has gone through many battles and rulers over the centuries. This fort adds to the historical charm of this scenic park.
A few years back, this place was a hunting ground for the Maharajas of Jaipur. The royal families of Jaipur enjoyed hunting animals (especially tigers) from the Ranthambore Fort. Previously the hunting expeditions were seen as a show of strength and skill but then in the 20th century, attitudes towards wildlife were slowly beginning to shift. People started to recognize wild animals as important wonders that need to be protected. In 1955, the Indian government declared the area as the Sawai Madhopur Wildlife Sanctuary, and in 1973, it finally came under the Project Tiger.
Under Project Tiger, this place became a safe space for the tigers. The Project Tiger is an initiative by the government to protect the declining population of tigers. It’s an important point of the history of Ranthambore National Park. The aim of this project was to create a safe habitat for tigers and activities like poaching and hunting of tigers were banned under this. This project was initiated back in 1973 and 9 tiger reserves were chosen under this, among which, one was Ranthambore National Park.
Project Tigers aware people of the importance of tiger conservation. Steps like Anti-Poaching Measures, Habitat Improvement, Community Involvement, Monitoring and Research, Awareness Campaigns, Infrastructure Development, Relocation of Villages, etc come under this project and all of this was taken to protect the remaining population of tigers. Because of successful conservation, now around more than 80 tigers can be found inside the area. Ranthambore has become one of the most successful tiger reserves in India.
